The Power of Presence: How EMDR Intensives are Healing Trauma
Healing from trauma often feels like a marathon run in weekly, forty-five-minute increments. While traditional weekly therapy is a foundational and effective tool for many, there is a growing movement toward EMDR Intensives…a deep-dive approach designed to accelerate the desensitization and reprocessing of traumatic memories.
As both an EMDR therapist and someone who has sat in the client’s chair for both weekly and intensive sessions, I have seen the profound transformation this work offers from both sides of the room. EMDR Intensives haven’t just changed my career; they have fundamentally transformed my life.
What is EMDR?
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is an evidence-based psychotherapy technique specifically engineered to relieve the psychological distress associated with traumatic memories. It is widely recognized as one of the most effective treatments for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and general trauma.
Instead of simply talking about a traumatic event, EMDR uses bilateral stimulation (such as guided eye movements or tapping) to help the brain reprocess “stuck” memories, allowing them to be stored in a way that no longer triggers a trauma response. It’s important to note that sometimes our trauma responses are necessary: such as when we are unsafe or even sometimes to deal with the overwhelming stress of the world. I have a free video that shares more about this: please check it out!

Is it time to try Intensive EMDR Therapy?
The EMDR Intensives Difference: Healing at the Speed of Life
An EMDR Intensive is exactly what it sounds like: a dedicated, multi-day period where we immerse ourselves fully in the processing of your trauma.
While the words “intensive” and “quickly” can feel daunting, the goal isn’t to rush your nervous system. Rather, it is to provide the uninterrupted space necessary to get to the root of a core issue without the “start-stop” cycle of weekly sessions. This approach often leads to breakthroughs in days that might otherwise take months.
A Holistic Approach to Safety
In my practice, we honor the intensity of this work by integrating Somatic Therapies and Internal Family Systems (IFS). This ensures we are holding space safely for all “parts” of you at all times. By listening to the body’s physical responses and acknowledging the different internal voices that carry your burdens, we create a container of safety that allows for deep, lasting shifts.
Is an EMDR Intensive Right for You?
I recognize that an immersive setting isn’t the right fit for everyone. Some prefer the pacing of a weekly container, and I am always happy to provide referrals for excellent therapists who work in that traditional setting.
However, if you feel ready to explore who you can be when you are finally free from the weight of your past, an intensive might be your path forward.
Finding Your Personal Path to Healing
In my intake process, I meet you exactly where you are. We take the time to look beyond how trauma has shaped you and focus on the person you are becoming. Together, we can determine if this deep-dive approach is the right catalyst for your recovery.
