Charity Teaches Trauma Sensitive Yoga to Therapists at the Teen Conference

Last week, Charity was honored to present to a group of therapists at the Teen Therapy Conference in Bluebell, PA about Trauma Sensitive Yoga (TSY). Charity was joined by her long-term co-presenter and yoga group co-facilitator Kelly Hagenbaugh. Charity and Kelly have run hundreds of yoga groups together for trauma survivors. These groups have ranged from one session to 36 week groups, with most of their groups being 6-12 weeks of teaching survivors how to befriend both their bodies and their parts.

Trauma Sensitive Yoga

Just like in the TSY groups Charity and Kelly run, they taught the therapists about the process by inviting them to connect with their bodies, first through Rock Ceremony, a mindfulness practice, and then through trauma sensitive movement. They shared with the group how trauma sensitive yoga is for all body types and abilities, and can be anything the person needs it to be. Trauma Sensitive Yoga is all about reconnecting with your body as you heal from trauma, and this can be in very small ways, such as with breath or stillness. It can also be in big, expressive, releasing movements. There is no right or wrong to the way for a trauma survivor to do TSY, as long as they have all the options they need to give their body what it needs!

If you are interesting in exploring more about trauma sensitive yoga, or rock ceremony, be sure to check out Charity’s online course! It has a module dedicated to just that- you can follow along in a video. Or if you are a therapist who wants to learn more, be sure to be signed up for Charity’s newsletter, where she shares upcoming training opportunities, Charity and Kelly have a 3 day training for therapists to learn how to use TSY in their own practices- whether individually or with groups. You can sign up for Charity’s newsletter on the bottom of every page of her website!

As we say in TSY- Yoga welcomes us home to your bodies. We hope you take the next step today to reconnect with yours.
